Chelsea FC Women have won the FA Women’s Community Shield by defeating Manchester City 2-0 at Wembley this afternoon.
Millie Bright and Erin Cuthbert were on target for The Blues as the South West Londoners won yet another domestic trophy.
In a goalless first half at the national stadium, Sam Kerr wasted a couple of good goalscoring opportunities for The Blues while Janine Beckie had a goal disallowed for offside at the other end and City debutant Chloe Kelly drilled an effort against the post.
Chelsea started the second half strongly and Kerr again twice went close but produced a couple of unforgivable misses.
Hayes’ side were then given something of a helping hand just after the hour when City midfielder Jill Scott was dismissed for a second bookable offence. The Blues took heart from that decision and opened the scoring just four minutes later when centre-back Bright hit a powerful 30-yard effort into the roof of the city net.
Chelsea made sure of the victory in second half injury time when substitute Cuthbert clinically fired the ball home from inside the box as The Blues went on to lift a first FA Women’s Community Shield.
Hayes’ side begin their Barclays FA Women’s Super League title defence at Manchester United on 6 September.
