Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has again been busy in the transfer market, completing the signing of Brazilian international defender Thiago Silva according to reports on The Blues’ official website.
The 35-year-old defender moves to The Bridge on a free transfer with his contract with French club Paris Saint-Germain coming to an end. Chelsea will hold an option to extend the player’s contract by a further year.
Thiago Silva was a UEFA Champions League runner-up with Paris Saint-Germain last season with the Parisians having recently been defeated 1-0 by German club Bayern Munich in the final. Despite that disappointment, the player was still a domestic treble-winner with Paris Saint-Germain last season.
The defender has enjoyed a glittering 18-year playing career which has seen him largely represent three major clubs. After early spells with RS Futebol, Juventude, Porto B and Dynamo Moscow, Thiago Silva spent three years with Fluminense. The player enjoyed another three-year stay in Italy with AC Milan before joining latest club Paris Saint-Germain in 2012.
Thiago Silva made 315 appearances for the French club while he netted 17 goals. The defender was part of a Paris Saint-Germain side which won 23 major domestic trophies during his time at the Parc des Princes.
In his spells at AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, Thiago Silva was named in nine consecutive Team of the Years in both the Serie A and Ligue 1. The player’s experience will be absolutely vital to what is a very youthful Chelsea side.
