Chelsea completed the signing of a promising young defender yesterday with FC Barcelona’s Xavier Mbuyamba joining the club as reported on their official website.
Mbuyamba is a Dutch defender who has previously experienced senior football back in his homeland in the Eerste Divisie.
The 18-year-old centre-back originates from Maastricht and he came through the youth ranks of his hometown club MVV Maastricht before making his senior debut for the Dutch second tier side.
Mbuyamba joined Spanish giants FC Barcelona last summer and he initially linked up with the Catalan club’s Under-19 side. The defender did feature in the Barcelona B squad earlier this year but did not feature in the Segunda Division B.
It is understood that Chelsea have agreed a three-year contract with Mbuyamba. The player is expected to link-up with Andy Myers’ Development Squad for the upcoming Premier League 2 campaign.
With first team boss Frank Lampard having no concerns in putting his faith in the club’s young players, Mbuyamba has a real chance of making the grade at Stamford Bridge if he impresses at Under-23 level. Several former Development Squad stars featured for the Chelsea first team last season including the likes of Reece James, Fikayo Tomori, Billy Gilmour, Armando Broja, Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham to name a few.
