The Chelsea Development Squad have made a disappointing start to 2019 with a 1-0 Premier League 2 defeat to Blackburn Rovers at The Recreation Ground in Aldershot this afternoon.
Joe Nuttall scored the only goal of the game for Rovers from the penalty spot as The Blues suffered a second consecutive defeat in the Premier League 2.
Blackburn Rovers were the stronger side in the first half. Home keeper Jamie Cumming had to be alert to push a John Buckley effort to safety before Stefan Mols fired a shot against the post.
Chelsea were unlucky not to take the lead against the run of play when Marc Guehi played in Tino Anjorin to take aim at goal but Blackburn Rovers defender Tyler Magloire managed to keep the midfielder’s effort out of the net with a last-ditch block. Tariq Lamptey then forced a save from visiting keeper Ollie Byrne before Brad Lyons saw a shot saved by Cumming.
An effort from Nuttall was cleared off the line before the same player netted from the penalty spot after Guehi had caught Lyons in the box.
Blackburn Rovers were nearly 2-0 up early in the second half when Joseph Colley deflected the ball towards his own goal but Blues keeper Cumming was able to claim the ball.
Billy Gilmour then forced a save from Byrne with a shot across goal before Cumming pulled off a stunning stop to prevent Nuttall from scoring at the near post.
Chelsea pilled on late pressure but were unable to level matters as the visitors recorded a 1-0 win.
Joe Edwards’ men are back in action on Wednesday evening when they face Peterborough United in the Checkatrade Trophy at Stamford Bridge.
