FA Youth Cup holders Chelsea will not be lifting the trophy again this year after Andy Myers’ side were dumped out of the competition by Manchester United at the Leigh Sports Village on Monday evening.
The Blues fell to a 4-3 defeat to United in the North West as they crashed out of the competition at the third round stage.
Chelsea fell behind after just eight minutes when Mason Greenwood nipped in to fire the ball past Karlo Ziger into the net.
The Blues were unlucky not to win a penalty kick when Tariq Lamptey looked to have been fouled in the box before James Garner cleared Daishawn Redan’s effort off the line.
Myers’ men levelled just before the break when Lamptey played a neat exchange of passes with Thierno Ballo before firing his effort into the net.
A nightmare start to the second period saw United go 2-1 up with Greenwood curling a superb effort into the top corner.
The home side made it 3-1 with Di’shon Bernard’s goal-bound effort deemed to have crossed the line before Chelsea were handed a lifeline when Alliou Traore was sent-off.
Greenwood then capitalised on a defensive error to notch United’s fourth goal of the match before a late rally saw Tino Anjorin make it 4-2 from the penalty spot before Redan completed the scoring a minute later with an accurate finish as The Blues exited the competition.
Chelsea are back in action on 5 January when they travel to Leicester City in the Under-18 Premier League.
