Chelsea moved up to second place in the Premier League table following a comfortable victory over a fellow London side on Sunday.
After good runs of form in October, the team’s manager, Maurizio Sarri and one of the club’s English midfielders have been shortlisted for awards.
Sarri has finally officially announced who the current club captain is and will be for the foreseeable future.
And, the date of Chelsea’s Carabao Cup quarter-final match against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge has been officially confirmed.
Blues fan and Football Journalism student Jonty Colman looks at five of the major talking points from around the club from the past seven days.
Chelsea 3-1 Crystal Palace
Chelsea extended their unbeaten run to 16 matches with a 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Alvaro Morata scored in both sides of half-time, taking his tally for the season up to six in all competitions. He could have had his second hat-trick for the club but he was unable to take his late chance after going clear through on goal.
Pedro got Chelsea’s third of the match to secure victory, whilst Palace’s equaliser came via Andros Townsend shortly after the interval.
With Liverpool being held to a 1-1 draw by Arsenal on Saturday, the Blues have now climbed above the Reds and remain just two points behind league leaders Manchester City.
Another unbeaten month as a Premier League manager for Sarri has seen him make the four-man shortlist to win October’s Premier League Manager of the Month award.
In his three league matches last month, Sarri’s side were winners away at Southampton and Burnley, victories that took place either side of a 2-2 draw at home to Manchester United.
Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe, City manager Pep Guardiola and Brighton and Hove Albion’s Chris Hughton stand in the way of Sarri and the accolade, the winner of which is set to be announced tomorrow.
And Barkley too
Ross Barkley’s three goals and three assists in as many games have earned him a place on the six-man shortlist to win October’s Premier League Player of the Month award.
Barkley scored in all three of the Blues’ league matches last month, including a last-gasp equaliser against United. He also provided an assist at Southampton and two more at Burnley.
Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang (Arsenal), Anthony Martial (Manchester United), Mat Ryan (Brighton and Hove Albion), Fernandinho (Manchester City) and Callum Wilson (Bournemouth) have also been nominated, with the winner being announced in cohesion with the manager’s award.
Cahill confirmed as captain
After months of speculation, Sarri has officially announced that defender Gary Cahill is still the club’s official captain.
Cahill has only made five appearances in all competitions this season, four of which have been as captain in the Europa League and the Carabao Cup.
Cesar Azpilicueta, who has captained the Blues in all 11 league matches so far, has been confirmed as the club’s official vice-captain. Willian has also led out the Blues this season, during their 1-0 win over PAOK Saolinka in September.
Carabao Cup date set
Chelsea’s match against Bournemouth in the next round of the Carabao Cup will take place on Wednesday 19th December.
It is a repeat of last year’s quarter-final, which, thanks to a late goal from Morata, the Blues won 2-1.
The match has not been selected for television coverage.
That’s all for this week, tune in next Thursday where I will be discussing matches in the Europa League, Premier League and more in the Stamford Roar.
