Chelsea FC Women will get their 2018/2019 UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign underway this afternoon when they take on Bosnian outfit SFK 2000 Sarajevo in the first leg of their last 32 tie.
Emma Hayes’ side reached the semi-finals for the very first time in their history in last season’s competition and they will be hoping to go a step further this year by reaching the final.
The Blues have been handed a relatively easy looking two-legged tie against SFK Sarajevo, a side who have already played three matches just to qualify for this stage of the competition. Chelsea face the Bosnians at the Asim Ferhatovic Hase Stadium this afternoon in the first leg while the return fixture will take place at Kingsmeadow in a fortnight’s time.
Chelsea have strengthened their squad further over the summer and are unbeaten in their opening three matches of the domestic season. The Blues were held to a goalless draw by FA Women’s Super League title rivals Manchester City in their first league fixture of the new campaign at the weekend, however, it should be noted that Hayes’ side started without star striker Fran Kirby as the player is eased back into action after picking up a knock while on international duty with England.
The South West Londoners are likely to return to the goal trail this afternoon with or without Kirby starting the match and it is hoped that defeating SFK 2000 Sarajevo over two legs will be a little step in making further huge strides forward in the competition this term.
