A young Chelsea side made up of players from the club’s Development Squad got off to a flying start in the Checkatrade Trophy by beating Sky Bet League Two club Swindon Town 4-0 at The County Ground this evening.

Joe Edwards’ men reached the last four of last season’s competition and they made a truly excellent start this term with a resounding victory in Wiltshire.

Charlie Brown notched a double for The Blues while Charly Musonda and Ike Ugbo were also on target as Chelsea put down a marker for the remainder of the tournament.

Edwards’ side took a 15th-minute lead when Brown produced a simple finish from close range before a Musonda penalty kick extended The Blues’ advantage to two goals with just under half an hour on the clock.

Further goals were to follow after the break as Chelsea maintained their dominance. First, Brown doubled his personal goal tally for the evening with another prolific finish from inside the box before Ugbo headed in a fourth at the death to add gloss to the win.

Chelsea continue their Checkatrade Trophy campaign with a visit to Rodney Parade to take on Newport County in late September before facing Plymouth Argyle at Home Park a little over a month later.
