A young Chelsea side will take on Sky Bet League One side Plymouth Argyle and Sky Bet League Two clubs Newport County and Swindon Town in the group stage of this season’s Checkatrade Trophy after the draw for Round One was made earlier today.

The Blues qualify to enter the tournament as they boast a Category One academy with Under-23’s boss Joe Edwards set to field members of the club’s Development Squad in the tournament.

It has been revealed that Chelsea will play all three group fixtures away from Stamford Bridge this season. The Blues are expected to start the tournament with a trip to Home Park to face third tier outfit Plymouth Argyle before taking on Swindon Town at The County Ground and Newport County at Rodney Parade. Dates, kick-off times and ticket information will be announced in due course.

The Chelsea Development Squad went all the way to the semi-finals of the competition last season before being defeated by eventual tournament winners Lincoln City at Sincil Bank. The contest ended in a 1-1 draw with the home side reaching Wembley for the first time in their 133-year history courtesy of a 4-2 win on penalty kicks.

A total of 16 Category One academy sides will enter the competition this season.
