Chelsea have completed the signing of AS Roma left-back Emerson Palmieri on a four-and-a-half year deal according to The Blues’ official website.

The 23-year-old Santos born full-back has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge for the past couple of weeks and it has now been reported that a transfer has been completed.

It is thought that Chelsea have paid the Italian Serie A club a transfer fee of around £17.5 million to secure the defender’s services and the player has been allocated the squad number 33 by The Blues. It is thought that a further £5.2 million will filter through to AS Roma in respect of various bonuses.

Palmieri started his career with hometown club Santos where the youngster went on to make 33 senior appearances in which he scored three goals. A loan spell with Italian club Palermo followed before Palmieri joined latest club AS Roma in a loan deal which was later made permanent for a transfer fee of close to £2 million.

The defender had made the left-back position his own during his time at the Stadio Olimpico and was hugely impressive in Serie A. Palmieri is now expected to battle fellow full-back Marcos Alonso for a place in the Chelsea starting XI.
