The Chelsea Development Squad have suffered a first defeat in three matches after being beaten 2-1 by Everton at the Merseyrail Community Stadium in Southport.

Daishawn Redan was again on the scoresheet for The Blues but that goal was to be the only bright spark on a disappointing evening on Merseyside.

Everton took an early lead when a cross from the left found its way to Fraser Hornby who bundled the ball into the net from close range.

Chelsea struggled to create clear goalscoring opportunities but did level matters with their first real chance just after the half hour mark. Reece James put an excellent delivery into the box and in-form attacker Redan was on hand to prod the ball into the net.

The Blues searched for a second goal but Kyle Scott volleyed a loose ball well over the bar as the half ended level.

Joe Edwards’ men almost took the lead early in the second period but Redan headed wide from a Harvey St Clair cross.

Redan then tested home keeper Mateusz Hewelt with a shot on the turn before disaster struck at the other end when Bassala Sambou produced a cool finish to hand The Toffees the lead.

James and St Clair both fired shots just wide of goal as Chelsea looked for an immediate reaction before Blues keeper Jamie Cumming was alert to deny Lewis Gibson from adding to Everton’s lead.

Home keeper Hewelt did have a nervous moment late on as he fumbled St Clair’s corner delivery but Everton survived and went on to record a 2-1 win.
