Chelsea Ladies continued their pursuit of the FA Women’s Super League 1 title with a narrow 1-0 victory over Everton Ladies at Kingsmeadow this afternoon.

New signing Jonna Andersson’s first goal for The Blues was enough to fire Emma Hayes’ side to victory on a tense afternoon in Kingston upon Thames.

It was Everton who enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges and Blues keeper Hedvig Lindahl had to be at her best to tip a Chloe Kelly free-kick over the bar.

Chelsea were lucky not to fall behind moments later when Anita Asante hauled down Courtney Sweetman-Kirk in the box. The Everton player took the resulting spot kick herself but was only able to watch in vain as the ball struck the post.

The let off seemed to shake The Blues into action and Hannah Blundell forced a good save from visiting keeper Lizzie Durack before Karen Carney had two efforts which failed to produce a goal as the half ended goalless.

The second period saw Everton again start brightly but the threat from Chelsea increased as the half went on. Crystal Dunn’s powerful effort had Durack worried as she struggled to grasp the ball before The Toffees keeper tipped a Ji So-Yun strike around the post.

Chelsea finally grabbed the winning goal six minutes before time when substitute Fran Kirby teed up new signing Andersson to fire the ball into the net from close range to hand The Blues a smash and grab one-goal victory.
