Chelsea are into the Fifth Round of this season’s FA Cup after beating Newcastle United 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.
Michy Batshuayi bagged a brace for The Blues while Marcos Alonso was also on the scoresheet as Antonio Conte’s men made easy work of the fellow English Premier League opponents.
It was the visitors who had the first real chance of the match but Jonjo Shelvey’s effort was saved by Chelsea’s back up keeper Willy Caballero.
Chelsea failed to test visiting keeper Karl Darlow during the first half hour of the contest but when the former Nottingham Forest stopper was called into action he was picking the ball out of the net with Batshuayi notching a rare goal with a finish from close range.
Dwight Gayle and Shelvey forced saves from Caballero as the visitors fought back, before The Blues took a two-goal lead into the half time interval when Batshuayi doubled his tally for the game with another prolific finish.
The second half saw Alonso connect with a Davide Zappacosta cross but the full-back was unable to beat Darlow in the Newcastle United goal.
Decent goalscoring opportunities were proving difficult to come by but Chelsea did grab a third goal 18 minutes from time when Alonso floated a sublime free-kick into the corner of the net.
A late flurry of chances for the home side failed to produce further goals with Batshuayi in particular, unlucky not to score and complete a first Chelsea hat-trick.
Many fans believe that the FA Cup may be Chelsea’s greatest chance of success this season and Conte’s men have now taken another step closer to the final with a 3-0 win.
