Chelsea Ladies have been knocked out of this season’s Continental Tyres Cup after suffering a 1-0 defeat to current holders Manchester City Women at Kingsmeadow.

Danish international Nadia Nadim bagged the only goal of the match in the first half as Chelsea suffered a first defeat at their new Kingsmeadow home.

Fran Kirby twice came close to opening the scoring for The Blues early on with her second chance forcing a goal-line clearance from Manchester City defender Steph Houghton.

The visitors were the first side to grab an advantage soon after when Jill Scott crossed for Nadim to sweep the ball into the net and City could have even finished the half two goals up if not for a superb Hedvig Lindahl save which denied Nikita Parris from adding her name to the scoresheet.

The second half took some time to produce any goalmouth action and one of Chelsea’s best chances to level the scores came in the 64th minute when Hannah Blundell looked sure to score until City keeper Karen Bardsley pulled off a wonderful last-ditch save.

Parris then blasted a chance over the bar at the other end when it looked easier to score before Blues defender Millie Bright fluffed a golden opportunity to equalise at the death as the visitors secured a priceless victory and a place in the Continental Tyres Cup final.
