The Chelsea Development Squad will face a home fixture against Sky Bet League One outfit Oxford United in the quarter-finals of the Checkatrade Trophy after the draw was made earlier this evening.

The Blues find themselves in the last eight of the competition for the first time after a thrilling 2-1 victory over Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Tuesday evening.

Charly Musonda had given Joe Edwards’ men a 1-0 lead on the South Coast but the match looked destined for penalties when the home side levelled in second half stoppage time. Chelsea were not affected by that blow though and Musonda converted a stunning free-kick with the last kick of the game to hand The Blues a deserved victory.

Chelsea’s reward for that win is a home tie against an Oxford United side which drew with them at Stamford Bridge in the same competition last season. On that occasion, Josimar Quintero’s strike gave The Blues the lead only for Kane Hemmings to equalise late on for the visitors as the match ended 1-1 in front of a crowd of over 5,000.

The pair are expected to go into battle at Stamford Bridge during the week commencing 22 January 2018 with an exact date and ticket details set to be announced in due course.
