Chelsea and Arsenal played out another draw in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at Stamford Bridge this evening.

The two sides could not be separated in either of their league matches this season and the London rivals remain deadlocked in their quest to reach the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

Alvaro Morata went close to opening the scoring early on but fired wide from a narrow angle while Victor Moses twice tested visiting keeper David Ospina.

Both sides struggled to create good goalscoring opportunities as a cagey first half wore on and Alex Iwobi registered The Gunners’ only shot on target of the first half with an effort from inside the box just before the break.

Cesc Fabregas also tried his luck with a chance for Chelsea without success as the half ended goalless.

The second half saw Morata force a save from Ospina with a strike from long range while Thibaut Courtois prevented Iwobi from scoring at the other end. Willian also tested The Gunners keeper before Morata again failed to find the back of the net with another effort on goal.

Courtois saved a long range Granit Xhaka shot before both Tiemoue Bakayoko and Michy Batshuayi struck efforts wide late on as the match ended goalless.

The game saw the video assistant referee (VAR) system used in the second half as Chelsea were denied a penalty kick when Fabregas went down under pressure from Danny Welbeck.

The second leg takes place at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday 24 January (kick-off 8pm).
