Madrid, the capital of Spain, is the first of Chelsea’s three away trips of the season in their UEFA Champions League group stage campaign.
Atletico Madrid face The Blues at their brand new home, the Estadio Metropolitano.
Since Diego Simeone’s side moved grounds, they have enjoyed a successful start on home soil. Their opening match there was a 1-0 victory over Malaga, which they then topped a week later with a 2-0 victory over Sevilla.
Chelsea go into this match on the back of a seven match unbeaten run in all competitions. Since their opening day defeat against Burnley, they have recorded impressive victories over the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Leicester City, Qarabag FK, Nottingham Forest and Stoke City.
The Blues currently top Group C, whilst Atletico are in joint second position, following a goalless draw with AS Roma.
On paper, a trip to Madrid will be Chelsea’s toughest Group C tie in this season’s competition, and they have struggled to perform their in recent times.
In history, they have only met twice in Spain, both of which ended in draws. Their most recent clash in Madrid came during the first leg of the semi-final in the 2013-14 season. They drew 0-0 in the first leg in Spain before Diego Costa and Thibaut Courtois, who both became an integral part of the Chelsea squad the following season, inspired Atletico to a 3-1 win in the second leg.
Atletico faced their old rivals Real Madrid in the final that year, but Simeone’s men were thrashed 4-1, after extra time.
Wednesday’s clash will be a cagey affair in which both sides will be craving any kind of positive scoreline.
Score prediction: Atletico Madrid 1-1 Chelsea
