Chelsea Ladies have confirmed the signing of Norwegian international defender Maria Thorisdottir according to The Blues’ official website.

The 24-year-old full-back has signed a two-year deal with The Blues ahead of the start of the new 2017 FA Women’s Super League 1 campaign which begins later this month.

Thorisdottir is known for her tough tackling and the player will provide some stern competition for places in the back-line this season.

The defender joins Emma Hayes’ side from Norwegian Toppserien club Klepp IL. Thorisdottir spent seven years with The Greens and was part of a Klepp IL side which has performed well so far this season with the club challenging for their highest league finish in their history.

Thorisdottir has represented her country at all age groups from under-15 to senior level and the player has made 10 full international appearances for Norway since making her senior debut back in February 2015. The player featured for The Grasshoppers alongside fellow Chelsea teammate Maren Mjelde in this summer’s UEFA Women’s European Championships in The Netherlands.

The defender has been allocated the number two shirt for Chelsea and Thorisdottir could make her debut for The Blues when they face Bristol City Women in their FA Women’s Super League 1 opener at Kingsmeadow on Sunday 24 September.
