Chelsea Ladies will face an extremely difficult tie in the UEFA Women’s Champions League after being paired with Women’s Bundesliga club Bayern Munich Frauen.

The draw for the first knockout round of the competition was made on Friday afternoon and Chelsea received the news that they will play a side which they would surely have been looking to avoid.

Like Emma Hayes’ Chelsea side, Bayern Munich Frauen are continuing to grow at a rapid rate in the women’s game and the German club beat The Blues 3-0 in a pre-season friendly in Austria just last week. That scoreline should not be taken seriously though with Bayern being ahead of Chelsea in terms of their preparations for the new campaign.

Chelsea were dumped out of the UEFA Women’s Champions League at this stage of the competition last season after being beaten by another German club, VfL Wolfsburg 4-1 on aggregate. On that occasion, Hayes’ side failed to show their true potential in the First Leg as they were defeated 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.

The First Leg of the tie against Bayern Munich Frauen will take place at Kingsmeadow on 4/5 October with the Second Leg being staged in Germany on 11/12 October.

Olympique Lyonnais Feminin are the current UEFA Women’s Champions League holders after beating Paris Saint-Germain Feminines in last season’s final in Cardiff.
