Arsenal Ladies and The Netherlands striker Vivianne Miedema has admitted that her nation must play attractive football at this summer’s UEFA Women’s European Championship to grow their fanbase.
The 20-year-old former Bayern Munich goal machine is expected to be the star player for the host nation after topping last season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League goalscoring charts.
Speaking to UEFA representatives prior to the tournament, Miedema believes that The Netherlands must impress to have any chance of promoting their game to an audience which may include many fans who are uneducated about the women’s game and attract new fans to Dutch women’s football.
“I think there should be more promotion (of the women’s game), also in The Netherlands” Miedema told UEFA.
“I think it should be on TV more and there should be bigger sponsors and, of course we should play attractive football.
“We have an important role to play, we need to make people want to come back and watch us again.”
The Netherlands kick-off the UEFA Women’s European Championship with a match against Norway at Stadion Galgenwaard in Utrecht this evening (kick-off 5pm). Sarina Wiegman’s side face some stern competition in Group A with matches against a quietly fancied Danish side and Belgium to follow.
