A number of Chelsea players pulled on their boots for their first pre-season outings of the summer on Saturday afternoon with both the first team and development squad in action.
The Chelsea Presser reviews the performances of both sides as the club began their preparations for the 2017/2018 campaign.
First Team: Chelsea 8 Fulham 2
It was a case of goals galore for The Blues’ first team in a pre-season friendly match against Sky Bet Championship club Reading at Cobham.
Chelsea raced into a two-goal lead courtesy of a brace from Willian before Cesar Azpilicueta put the ball in his own net to make it 2-1. Young striker Michy Batshuayi made sure that there would be no Fulham comeback with a double while Willian completed a first half hat-trick to give The Blues a 5-1 lead at the interval.
The second half saw Blues boss Antonio Conte name a different XI and despite Fulham making it 5-2 with a Stefan Johansen penalty kick, the Chelsea goals continued to flow with forgotten man Loic Remy netting goals either side of an Azpilicueta penalty kick to give The Blues a stunning 8-2 victory.
Development Squads: Chelsea 5 Southend United 1 & Crawley Town 1 Chelsea 1
Two Chelsea Under-23 sides went into battle on Saturday afternoon with one of those sides facing Sky Bet League One outfit Southend United at Cobham and the second Chelsea XI taking on Crawley Town at the Checkatrade Stadium.
At Cobham, a Chelsea XI secured an excellent 5-1 victory over The Shrimpers while in West Sussex, Charlie Brown looked to have given The Blues a 1-0 victory over Crawley Town until Joe McNerney levelled matters late on.
The senior squad now travel to Asia for their pre-season tour while further fixtures on home soil await both the Under-18s and development squad.
