Chelsea defender Baba Rahman is set to join Bundesliga club Schalke on a season long loan according to the Mail Online.

The 22 year old Ghanaian full back joined The Blues just a year ago from German club FC Augsburg for a transfer fee of around £14 million but the player has found opportunities limited at Stamford Bridge.

Rahman has made just 23 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea in his Stamford Bridge career to date and his prospects under new Blues boss Antonio Conte look slim with youngster Ola Aina impressing at left back in Chelsea’s pre-season fixtures. With Rahman set to be starved of first team action in West London, it has been reported that the player will return to German football with Schalke.

Schalke are understood to be set to pay a fee to loan the defender while the move will see Rahman link up with former FC Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl once again at the Veltins-Arena. The German club are looking to strengthen their defence as only Borussia Monchengladbach had a worse defensive record in the top half of the Bundesliga table last season.

It is believed that Schalke will beat off competition from Spanish club Atletico Madrid and Italian Serie A outfit AS Roma to net the Ghanaian international defender.
