Frank Lampard has suffered his first cup final defeat as Chelsea manager with The Blues going down 2-1 to Arsenal in The Heads Up FA Cup final at Wembley this evening.
Christian Pulisic’s goal gave Chelsea an early lead but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s double saw the tie swing in Arsenal’s favour on an occasion which saw Mateo Kovacic dismissed for two bookings.
Chelsea started brightly in North West London with Mason Mount testing Arsenal keeper Emiliano Martinez from distance before The Blues took the lead when Olivier Ground teed up Pulisic to score.
Arsenal responded with Nicolas Pepe testing Willy Caballero from distance before Martinez denied Pulisic at the other end.
Chelsea conceded a penalty kick just before the half-hour mark when Cesar Azpilicueta fouled Aubameyang in the box. The Arsenal forward picked himself up and successfully converted from the spot himself.
The second half saw very few clear goalscoring chances produced. The first real chance came Arsenal’s way midway through the half. Chelsea’s defence were in disarray and Aubameyang had time to lift the ball over Caballero into the net.
Chelsea, who had already lost Pulisic to injury, saw Kovacic dismissed for a second booking shortly after Arsenal’s goal, it was a really harsh decision with little contact made.
That decision effectively ended any chance of a Chelsea fightback as Arsenal went on to lift the Emirates FA Cup for the third time in six years.
