Chelsea have continued their preparations for the return of Premier League action later this month with a 1-0 friendly victory over Sky Bet Championship club Reading at Cobham this afternoon.

Pedro netted the only goal of the game for The Blues in the first half as Frank Lampard’s side completed another test ahead of their return to competitive action against Aston Villa at Villa Park on 21 June.

Chelsea fielded a star-studded side against The Royals and they were able to edge beyond the second tier side in dull conditions at Cobham.

The Premier League recently gave Chelsea the green light to arrange friendly matches providing that travelling time does not exceed 90 minutes unless special dispensation is given.

The Blues held an in-house training match at Stamford Bridge at the weekend as manager Lampard handed his players the opportunity to get a feel for the surroundings in SW6 once again and this afternoon’s meeting with Reading was Chelsea’s first fixture against external opponents.

The South West Londoners are expected to arrange more friendly fixtures over the course of the next 10 days as they prepare for their long-awaited return to action against relegation-threatened Aston Villa, a side who they have already beaten this season.
