Chelsea advanced to the fourth round of the 2018/2019 Carabao Cup with a spirited 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield.
We take a look back at a fascinating fixture on Merseyside which saw Belgian forward Eden Hazard score a wonderful goal, one of the best witnessed by Chelsea fans for many years.
A goalless first half at Anfield had seen Alvaro Morata force home keeper Simon Mignolet into a save with an effort from a tight angle while Willy Caballero had to be alert to deny both Naby Keita and Sadio Mane at the other end.
The deadlock was broken 13 minutes into the second half when former Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge netted for the hosts from inside the box.
Liverpool never built on that moment and The Blues took full advantage 11 minutes from time when Emerson Palmieri scrambled the ball over the line, a goal which was awarded following a VAR review.
Sturridge then saw a shot strike the bar for the hosts before a moment of brilliance from Belgian ace Hazard five minutes from time won the tie for Chelsea. The attacker cut in from the right before slaloming his way through the Liverpool defence and unleashed a rocket of shot into the far corner of the net.
It was a moment which deserved to win the match and one which highlighted Hazard’s importance to Chelsea in what was to be his final season at Stamford Bridge.
