Eden Hazard’s first half penalty was enough as Chelsea defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the 2018 Emirates FA Cup final at Wembley.
The Belgian kept his cool to score from the spot after Phil Jones had committed a clumsy foul on him in the box moments earlier.
Chelsea had to weather a storm for long periods as Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United dominated the proceedings and had a goal disallowed for offside.
The Blues started the match well and United keeper David de Gea blocked an early Hazard effort with his feet before Chelsea were awarded a 22nd-minute penalty when the Belgian was clumsily brought down by opposing defender Jones. Hazard took the spot kick himself and coolly placed the ball low to de Gea’s left.
Manchester United were stronger in the second half and Marcus Rashford fired a shot straight at Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois before Alexis Sanchez bundled the ball into the net from an offside position, a decision which was confirmed by VAR.
Marcos Alonso then missed a glorious chance to make sure of the victory for Chelsea as he struck an effort straight at de Gea after being put through by N’Golo Kante.
Paul Pogba headed wide from a corner kick when in a glorious position to equalise late on but it remained 1-0 to Chelsea as manager Antonio Conte enjoyed a perfect send off following a successful spell in charge of The Blues.
