Manchester United have beaten Chelsea for a third time this season, winning 2-0 at Stamford Bridge in this evening’s English Premier League fixture.
Anthony Martial and Harry Maguire got the goals for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men as they made it three wins out of three against Chelsea in all competitions this season.
A tense first half-hour saw Chelsea create the better chances with Reece James and Michy Batshuayi sending efforts narrowly wide of the United goal while VAR was used to determine that United defender Maguire’s kick on Chelsea’s Belgian forward was accidental.
Manchester United opened the scoring against the run of play on the stroke of half-time when Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s cross was headed into the net by Martial.
Chelsea thought they had equalised early in the second half when Kurt Zouma fired in but VAR harshly deemed that Cesar Azpilicueta had committed a foul in the lead up to the goal.
Maguire then headed United into a two-goal lead from a corner kick before VAR haunted Chelsea again when Olivier Giroud’s effort was ruled out for offside as the visitors won the match 2-0.
It was a night of all things bad about VAR and one which may yet prove costly in Chelsea’s pursuit of UEFA Champions League football next season.
