Chelsea FC Women have kept the heat on FA Women’s Super League leaders Manchester City by beating Birmingham City 2-0 at Kingsmeadow this evening.

Guro Reiten and Beth England got the goals as The Blues got the victory which keeps them in touch with the league leaders.

It was a quiet start at a cold Kingsmeadow with neither goalkeeper really being tested. The best early chance fell to Erin Cuthbert but the Scot fired her effort straight at visiting keeper Hannah Hampton before Lucy Staniforth drilled a shot into the stand at the other end.

The deadlock was eventually broken on the stroke of half-time when Birmingham City struggled to clear the danger in their box and Reiten scrambled the ball home from six yards.

Chelsea went close to adding to their lead early in the second half but Hampton was on top form as she superbly denied Drew Spence.

The second goal soon arrived when England raced away and produced a calm finish from close range.

Chelsea continued to threaten the Birmingham City goal and England was desperately unlucky not to score when she saw a late effort cannon off the post. The scoreline remained 2-0 as Emma Hayes’ side continue to trail league leaders Manchester City by just one point.

The Blues are back in action on Sunday when they host Liverpool in the Women’s FA Cup fifth round.
