Chelsea FC Women are into the final of this season’s FA Women’s Continental League Cup after beating Manchester United 1-0 in their semi-final tie at the Leigh Sports Village this evening.

Norwegian international Maren Mjelde netted the only goal of the game in the second half in the North West as The Blues recorded a narrow victory which takes them into their first-ever FA Women’s Continental League Cup final.

The first half saw both sides put in plenty of effort but there were few clear cut chances, the nerves possibly playing their part for Manchester United and Chelsea with both teams aiming for a first appearance in the final.

The second half saw Blues striker Erin Cuthbert open up a chance for teammate Guro Reiten but the player could only fire her effort over the bar before the Norwegian struck a shot narrowly wide.

The breakthrough moment came 18 minutes from time when Cuthbert threaded the ball through to Mjelde and she placed the ball beyond home keeper Mary Earps into the net.

United had no answer to that goal and Chelsea went on to successfully claim their place in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup final for the first time.

Chelsea will face London rivals Arsenal in the final at The City Ground in Nottingham on Saturday 29 February.
