Chelsea are into the semi-finals of this season’s Under-18 Premier League Cup after beating Newcastle United 2-0 on Tyneside this morning.

Sam McClelland and Dion Rankine got the goals for Ed Brand’s side as they took another step towards lifting the trophy.

Chelsea started very well in the North East and both Marcel Lewis and George Nunn wasted early opportunities to trouble home keeper Oliver Marshall.

The Blues didn’t have to wait long for the game’s opening goal. A sixth-minute corner kick found the head of defender McClelland who powered the ball home to give his side an advantage.

Newcastle United had chances to level matters during the remainder of the first half but Blues keeper Jake Askew did well to claw away Lucas de Bolle’s bullet header before Lucas Gamblin saw his goal-bound effort blocked by his own player as the first 45 minutes ended with a one-goal lead for The Blues.

The second half saw home keeper Marshall recover well to keep out a deflected Sam Iling-Junior cross before Elliott Anderson’s header went narrowly over.

Chelsea doubled their lead just after the hour mark when Rankine bundled the ball home at the second attempt after initially being denied by Marshall.

Newcastle United searched for a goal during the remaining 29 minutes but they struggled to test Blues keeper Askew with only Josh Harrison forcing a save from the Chelsea youngster.

Chelsea can now look forward to their semi-final tie as they look to bring back the silverware to Stamford Bridge this season.
