Chelsea FC Women now have the destination of this season’s FA Women’s Super League title in their own hands after hammering champions Arsenal 4-1 at Meadow Park this afternoon.
The Blues knew that victory would give their title hopes a significant boost and they did just that as they completed a league double over London rivals Arsenal.
Beth England fired Chelsea ahead after just 10 minutes in Boreham Wood when she cut in from the right and curled a lovely effort onto the far corner of the net before Sam Kerr’s close range header made it 2-0 three minutes later.
It was to get even better for Chelsea when Sophie Ingle lofted a stunning effort into the top corner to make it 3-0 with just 20 minutes on the clock.
Arsenal should have pulled a goal back early in the second half when Vivianne Miedema chipped an effort wide before Guro Reiten headed home Chelsea’s fourth from a Jonna Andersson cross from the left.
Blues keeper Ann-Katrin Berger fumbled a Beth Mead header into the net to give Arsenal a consolation goal but that was as good as it got for The Gunners as Chelsea made a statement of intent in the title race.
