Chelsea FC Women are into the semi-finals of this season’s FA Women’s Continental League Cup after beating second tier side Aston Villa 3-1 in their quarter-final tie at Kingsmeadow this evening.

Villa held firm for 55 minutes against Emma Hayes’ side before they were finally sent crashing out of the competition.

Chelsea were dominant throughout the first half and Beth England saw two efforts strike the woodwork before fellow forward Erin Cuthbert had a shot cleared off the line.

The theme continued early in the second half with Ramona Bachmann being the next player to see a shot come back off the woodwork.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 55th minute. Defender Madga Eriksson’s own goal saw Chelsea exit the SSE Women’s FA Cup at the semi-final stage last season but her header put her side ahead in tonight’s FA Women’s Continental League Cup tie.

Villa keeper Sian Rogers then pulled off a fine save to deny Sophie Ingle before Ji So-Yun tapped home the game’s second goal with 10 minutes remaining.

Kerri Welsh then pulled a goal back for Villa to set up a nervy finish before Emily Murphy scored a first senior goal for Chelsea at the death to ensure The Blues’ safe progress into the last four.
