Injury-plagued Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater has joined English Premier League rivals Aston Villa on a loan deal for the remainder of the season according to The Blues’ official website.
The 29-year-old Manchester-born midfielder has endured a difficult spell at Stamford Bridge since joining Chelsea from Leicester City in September 2017.
Drinkwater has struggled with both form and a catalogue of injury problems and the player has made just 23 appearances for Chelsea in which he has scored one goal.
The midfielder was loaned out to Burnley for the first half of the season but The Clarets opted against extending the arrangement with Drinkwater again hindered by injuries which restricted him to just two first team outings.
It has now been confirmed that the player will look to finally get his career on track with Aston Villa. Drinkwater will spend the rest of the season with the relegation-threatened Villains before returning to Stamford Bridge at the end of the campaign.
Drinkwater is under contract with The Blues until summer 2022 and despite the club being likely to want to offload the player, they will be keen to recover some of the £35 million transfer fee which was paid to former club Leicester City for his services.
