Chelsea’s inconsistent home performances have continued with The Blues having gone down 2-0 to struggling Southampton this afternoon.
Michael Obafemi and Nathan Redmond got the goals as The Saints recorded a first victory over the South West Londoners in 10 attempts.
It was a pretty uninspiring first half-hour of action at Stamford Bridge in which Chelsea just had a tame Fikayo Tomori header on goal to show for their efforts, that attempt being easily gathered by visiting keeper Alex McCarthy.
Southampton the stunned The Blues by scoring with their very first meaningful attack. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side broke quickly upfield and Obafemi slotted away the opener.
There was little response from Chelsea in the 14 minutes which followed and Frank Lampard’s side went into the break behind.
Southampton had to ride their luck in the early stages of the second half. First, Tammy Abraham fired an effort just wide from a tight angle before a Callum Hudson-Odoi shot was marginally off-target.
Nathan Redmond tested home keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga with a shot which was heading for the bottom corner before the same player made it 2-0 when he struck from inside the area.
The second goal finally produced some life from the home side but other than a Christian Pulisic shot which was saved by McCarthy, they never really translated pressure into worthwhile chances as Chelsea crashed to a defeat.
Lampard’s men are back in action on Sunday when they travel to Arsenal in the English Premier League.
