Chelsea will be looking to build on their excellent pre-Christmas victory at Tottenham Hotspur when Southampton are the visitors to Stamford Bridge this afternoon.

The three points gained at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday has given Frank Lampard’s side breathing space in the race of qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

This afternoon, the South West Londoners come up against a struggling Southampton side at The Bridge. Manager Lampard will have to do without midfielder Mateo Kovacic who is suspended while Ruben Loftus-Cheek remains sidelined with his long-standing injury. Experienced defender Cesar Azpilicueta will be assessed after picking up a knock against Spurs.

Southampton travel to the capital without full-back Sam McQueen who remains sidelined with a cruciate ligament injury while winger Moussa Djenepo is also out with a hamstring injury. Forward Shane Long has a knee injury and is unlikely to feature.

Chelsea won the reverse fixture 4-1 at St Mary’s Stadium in October. Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, N’Golo Kante and Michy Batshuayi were all on-target for The Blues that day. The South West Londoners have won eight of their last nine matches against The Saints.

The match is scheduled to kick-off at 3pm and has not been selected for live television coverage.
