The Chelsea Development Squad have ended the calendar year with a spirited 1-1 draw at Liverpool this afternoon.
Henry Lawrence was on target for The Blues as they came from behind to collect a share of the spoils despite the late dismissal of Tariq Lamptey who picked up a second booking.
Chelsea started the match strongly on Merseyside with Jon Russell heading just wide before Charlie Brown saw a goal chalked off for offside. Brown went close again soon after that incident but nodded an effort marginally off target before Liverpool opened the scoring against the run of play when Curtis Jones fired home from a tight angle.
Blues keeper Jamie Cumming came to his side’s rescue shortly after the interval when he picked a venomous effort from Jake Cain out of the top corner.
Armando Broja and Brown then both directed efforts wide for Chelsea before Tino Anjorin scuffed a shot wide when in a great position to equalise.
Anjorin thumped his second effort on goal of the afternoon against the Liverpool crossbar before Lawrence finally levelled matters when he latched onto a long ball and raced away to score.
Joe Edwards’ men were then reduced to 10-men with Lamptey picking up a second booking. That moment didn’t really affect The Blues though and they were unlucky not to win the match when home keeper Ben Winterbottom denied Broja late on.
Chelsea will return to action on 6 January 2020 when they travel to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League 2.
