Michy Batshuayi scored another goal for Chelsea but it was not enough as they lost 2-1 to Manchester United in the Carabao Cup round of 16 at Stamford Bridge this evening.
The Blues trailed The Red Devils early on with United striker Marcus Rashford netting a penalty kick and while Batshuayi levelled in the second half, Rashford had the last laugh by netting a stunning free-kick.
Frank Lampard’s side started bright enough at The Bridge but they were dealt a blow when Marcos Alonso conceded a penalty kick which Rashford successfully dispatched.
Other than picking the ball out of the net, Chelsea keeper Willy Caballero was rarely troubled throughout a first half which lacked clear goalscoring chances.
Chelsea returned to the field for the second 45 minutes determined to get back into the match and striker Batshuayi rifled in the equaliser from outside of the box, a splendid effort.
Despite regaining momentum, wasn’t to be The Blues’ night and when Pedro gave away a free-kick on the edge of the box, Rashford again punished the South West Londoners, curling the ball into the corner of the net.
Alonso saw Sergio Romero save his effort late on but that was as busy as it would get for the United keeper as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side reached the last eight with relative ease.
