Marcos Alonso was the hero as his goal helped Chelsea overcome a spirited Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge this afternoon.

The former Sunderland full-back netted 17 minutes from time as The Blues battled to a 1-0 victory in South West London.

The first half saw Newcastle United defend resolutely to restrict Chelsea to very few clear goalscoring opportunities. Mason Mount forced a routine stop from Martin Dubravka while it took 43 minutes for The Blues to bring a meaningful save out of the visiting keeper, Alonso seeing his header clawed away from the top corner.

It was all Chelsea in the second half and both Kurt Zouma and Christian Pulisic tested Dubravka either side of a Tammy Abraham effort which crashed off the crossbar.

Frank Lampard’s men finally made the breakthrough in the 73rd minute. William saw a shot saved before moments later, Alonso crashed the ball home with a strike on the angle.

Abraham had one final opportunity to trouble Dubravka but his effort was tame as The Blues comfortably saw out the final minutes of the match.

Chelsea are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to The Netherlands to take on Ajax in their third UEFA Champions League group match.
