Southampton and Chelsea meet at St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday afternoon with both sides needing the three points for different reasons.

The home side will be keen to push themselves further clear of the relegation zone while Frank Lampard’s Chelsea side are hoping to challenge for UEFA Champions League qualification again this season.

Ahead of the meeting on the South Coast, we take a look back at previous encounters between the two clubs as we summarise Southampton v Chelsea ‘in numbers’.

7 – Southampton have lost seven of their last eight matches against Chelsea in all competitions

3 – Chelsea scored three goals without reply on their last trip to St Mary’s Stadium a year ago

6 – Southampton’s 3-0 home defeat to Chelsea last season saw six Saints players receive yellow cards from match referee Craig Pawson

4 – The two sides are currently separated by four points in the English Premier League table

23 – Chelsea’s home fixture against Southampton last season saw the two sides share 23 attempts on goal but the match ended 0-0

2001 – Chelsea were 2-0 winners on their first visit to St Mary’s Stadium back in 2001. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Mario Stanic were on target for The Blues that day

72 – Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea had 72% of the ball as they failed to find a way beyond the Southampton defence in January’s goalless draw at Stamford Bridge.

2013 – Southampton’s only-ever victory over Chelsea at St Mary’s came in 2013 when they beat The Blues 2-1 courtesy of goals from Jay Rodriguez and Ricky Lambert

15 – Chelsea have scored on each of their last 15 visits to Southampton, a run which started in 1998

Sunday’s fixture is scheduled to kick-off at 2pm and will be screened live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League channels.
