Chelsea will begin their involvement in this season’s Carabao Cup when they take on fourth tier club Grimsby Town at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening.
The Blues were runners-up in last season’s competition, losing 4-3 to Manchester City on penalty kicks following a goalless draw after 120 minutes at Wembley.
Chelsea go into their third round tie against Sky Bet League Two club Grimsby Town on the back of two consecutive defeats. Blues boss Frank Lampard could offer recalls to several of those players who missed out on places in the starting XI against Liverpool on Sunday with the likes of Willy Caballero, Kurt Zouma, Ross Barkley, Pedro and Michy Batshuayi amongst those who could by chosen face The Mariners.
The Blues will be without full-back Emerson Palmieri who has a thigh injury while Danish defender Andreas Christensen is struggling with a knock and won’t be risked. The tie may come too soon for Callum Hudson-Odoi who is continuing to build his fitness while Tammy Abraham is likely to be rested with the player nursing a minor shoulder problem.
Grimsby Town boss Michael Jolley is expected to hand a late fitness test to defender Harry Davis, although the player is rated as doubtful. Ludvig Ohman is out with a groin injury while Luke Waterfall is cup-tied. Striker Ahkeem Rose could be available to feature after overcoming a hamstring injury.
The match is scheduled to kick-off at 7.45pm and has not been selected for live television coverage.
