Chelsea have suffered their second league defeat of the season, going down 2-1 to Liverpool at Stamford Bridge this afternoon.

N’Golo Kante netted on his return to first team action but it was merely a consolation goal as visitors Liverpool cruised to a sixth victory out of six.

Chelsea were behind after just 14 minutes when Trent Alexander-Arnold struck a stunning effort from distance into the top corner of the net.

Frank Lampard’s men could have been level 10 minutes later but Tammy Abraham failed to beat visiting keeper Adrian when left one-on-one.

Cesar Azpilicueta then had a goal chalked off following a VAR review before Roberto Firmino netted Liverpool’s second goal from close range.

Firmino was unlucky not to bag himself a brace early in the second half when his effort was superbly saved by Kepa Arrizabalaga in the Chelsea goal.

Kante and Abraham then both went close for the home side. The former soon made it 2-1 when he danced his way through the Liverpool defence before slotting the ball beyond Adrian into the back of the net.

Michy Batshuayi was close to equalising late on but he couldn’t get enough connection on a Marcos Alonso cross as Liverpool held on for yet another three points.

Chelsea are back in action on Wednesday evening when Grimsby Town are the visitors to Stamford Bridge in the Carabao Cup.
