Chelsea FC Women have been defeated in their first pre-season fixture, The Blues going down 5-2 to Montpellier HSC in the Women’s French Cup.

Emma Hayes’ side found themselves 4-0 down in France before showing more fight during the second half of the match.

French midfielder Sandie Toletti opened the scoring for Montpellier within the first five minutes before two quick-fire goals from Sarah Puntigam left Chelsea chasing a 3-0 deficit with just 19 minutes on the clock.

Toletti netted her second goal in first half stoppage time to make it 4-0 before Chelsea debutant Guro Reiten scored to reduce the arrears.

The second half was more evenly contested but Montpellier were the first to get on the scoresheet with Nerilia Mondesir’s goal making it 5-1 on the hour.

Chelsea were to get a second goal in the game when Fran Kirby was fouled in the box deep in stoppage time. Maren Mjelde stepped up to take the spot kick and made no mistake from 12 yards.

The Blues will now contest a third place play-off against Bayern Munich in France on Thursday. The German club lost their semi-final tie 2-1 against Paris Saint-Germain this evening.

Chelsea begin their FA Women’s Super League campaign against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge on 8 September.
