Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud netted a hat-trick as The Blues defeated Dynamo Kiev 5-0 at the Olympic Stadium in the second leg of their round of 16 tie in the UEFA Europa League this evening.
Maurizio Sarri’s men were already leading 3-0 from the first leg a week ago but didn’t let up as they completed the job in style in the Ukraine.
It took Giroud just three minutes to break the deadlock for his side when the ball fell to his feet following a corner kick and he thumped in the opener from close range.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Giroud then saw efforts saved by home keeper Denys Boyko before the latter doubled both his and Chelsea’s lead with another clinical finish from a Marcos Alonso delivery into the box.
It was Alonso who was to net Chelsea’s third goal in first half stoppage time. Youngster Callum Hudson-Odoi put in a pinpoint cross and the full-back was on-hand to rifle the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the Dynamo Kiev net.
The hosts were brighter at the start of the second half and both Volodymyr Shepelev and Serhiy Sydorchuk tested Blues keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. It was Sydorchuk who was inches away from pulling a goal back for Dynamo Kiev when his effort stumped the post.
Chelsea took a four-goal lead just before the hour mark when Giroud completed his hat-trick by striking a shot into the roof of the net from just a few yards out.
Teenager Hudson-Odoi capped off a fine victory for The Blues 12 minutes from time when he received the ball from Man of the Match Giroud before netting another goal from close range for Sarri’s men.
Chelsea now go into the draw for the quarter-finals of the competition.
