Sky Bet Championship club Reading have completed the signing of Chelsea centre-back Matt Maizga on a loan deal until the end of the season according to The Blues’ official website.
The 23-year-old United States international defender has spent the first half of the campaign on loan at French club Nantes but he will now link-up with Reading as they battle to secure survival in the English second tier.
Maizga started his footballing career in his homeland and the player was on the books at the New York Red Bulls as a youngster before going on to make 42 appearances for the club at first team level during which he scored one goal.
In January 2016, Maizga joined Chelsea for a reported transfer fee of £3.5 million and the player signed a four-and-a-half-year deal at Stamford Bridge. The defender made his debut for The Blues as they won 4-0 at Aston Villa in April of that year, however, the player has made just one first team appearance for the club since.
With Maizga having been out of favour at The Bridge, Chelsea have opted to loan the player out on three occasions prior to his latest move to Reading. The defender has enjoyed two separate loan spells with Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem prior to his move to Ligue 1 outfit Nantes in the summer.
